This chapter offers some kindly advice for schizophrenics seeking recovery post-hospitalization. Maintaining mental health after the initial treatment is understandably difficult, and rife with physical and emotional challenges that may still overwhelm the patient. Acceptance of the fact that the patient is suffering from a mental illness is the first step; however, consistency is key, be it in taking things “a day at a time” in general, or in amassing a support network, be it familial or otherwise. The importance of taking medications regularly has been emphasized in a previous chapter, but a patient has plenty of other options available: follow-up treatments, therapy, day programs, psychosocial treatments, advance directives, and in certain cases, involuntary commitment.
