Explanation
Explanation
This chapter attempts to explain the Chinese economy based on the author's personal experience in Beijing. Over the course of five years, this experience has allowed him to supplement and qualify the economic analyses that were current at the time, because it provided a more concrete view of the human factors governing Chinese growth. These factors are not cultural constants but aspects of the contemporary “Chinese moment.” Their importance comes from the fact that they help explain both the practically universal increase in the costs of production and the emergence of a new and even more costly challenge, which implies a change in economic policy. The discussion focuses on the costs that will impact the country's economic growth, including the environmental costs of the demand for energy, rising labor costs, and the costs of social policy.
