This chapter discusses the importance that Friedrich Nietzsche accorded to music. A philologist and philosopher, Nietzsche was also a pianist and composer who maintained a lifelong desire for a career as a musician. The lack of success for his compositions did not discourage his reflections on music, and those who have written on his work have given music exemplary status for his entire philosophy. Nietzsche's approximately seventy works—lieder, symphonies, choral works, various piano pieces—lie at the very heart of his thinking, as well as the changes that occurred within that thinking. This chapter examines the decisive role that music played in Nietzsche's thought, with particular emphasis on Nietzsche as a pianist and the implications that the piano had on his tastes, feelings, and imagination.
