The Freedom of Equals

The Freedom of Equals

A Conclusion and a New Beginning

(p.178) The Freedom of Equals
Imaginal Politics

Chiara Bottici

Columbia University Press

This book has shown that politics has always been imaginal, and that the technical transformations of contemporary capitalism have tightened the link between them. The quantitative and qualitative changes to the imaginal are such that images are no longer what mediate our doing politics, but that which risks doing politics in our stead. This concluding chapter focuses on an old image, that of humanity as a boat, and explores the way in which it has been reoriented in recent times. In particular, it shows that such an image embodies a conception of freedom particularly suited to face the challenges of our time. It suggests that a certain image of freedom, understood as a freedom of equals, has emerged. Finally, it explains how two traditions of thought, anarchism and Marxism, converge in an image of freedom from which we can find a conclusion and a new beginning for the imaginal politics discussed in this book.
