This chapter explores realism in the cinema of Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne. It discusses their film practice, including their decision to make all their films together rather than seeking solo careers, their selection of actors, and filming method. It suggests that the Dardennes construct a realism of their own via a personal choice of formal and technical strategies deriving from different types of film practice. This style and their choice of working methods combine to create a cinema that refuses the formulaic and spectacular attributes of Hollywood, Bollywood, or wherever a dominant narrative coding prevails. The chapter then considers how we may relate some other philosophical ideas to the cinema of the Dardennes, before turning to the ethical dimension of their films.
