Abstract
Robert Butler decided to become a gero-psychiatrist, an unusual career choice in the 1950s given that very few psychiatrists were interested in mental illnesses afflicting the aged. But far from being dismissed as an eccentric, Butler found his professional niche while acquiring training that would serve him as a researcher and a clinician. Choosing to affiliate with an unorthodox psychiatric institute on the West Coast, the experience positioned Butler to join one of only two interdisciplinary teams of researchers in the United States that were investigating patterns of health and illness among older people. This chapter focuses on Butler's status as an apprentice between 1954 and 1963. Unlike most psychiatrists, his apprenticeship did not proceed through a series of psychodynamic traineeships that culminated in establishing a private practice. Nor did he undergo psychotherapy at the beginning of his residency. Instead, he learned a lot about psychopharmacology. He worked with experts in disparate disciplines who shared his curiosity about late-life moods and behaviors. Because he proved a capable trailblazer, his mentors and senior investigators treated him like a colleague, not an acolyte. In these years Butler came into his own, professionally and otherwise.
