This chapter contains reflections from various people as they come to terms with Japan's defeat in the aftermath of World War II. There is a general sense of ambivalence among the Japanese during this period; and while it is impossible to truly gauge each and every nuance to national feeling, the accounts mentioned so far in the book have indicated some sense of liberation and relief. Moving forward, the Japanese people have begun pushing for a Western-style democracy and a peaceful approach to prosperity and economic development, albeit they are largely unable to achieve a meaningful reconciliation with the peoples of the countries they have oppressed. These may be due in part to a lingering sense of imperialism or even a mere individual's inability to compensate for their actions, but as this book shows, the Japanese spirit cannot simply be reduced to any one person or ideology.
