This chapter focuses on events from 1938–39. In the summer of 1938 Jimmy Ernst, the son of surrealist painter Max Ernst, was sent as a teenager to America to escape deportation to Germany from occupied France. After traveling throughout the United States and holding numerous menial jobs in New York, he was referred to Iris Barry by the surrealist gallery owner Julien Levy. Ernst was eventually hired as a mail boy where he developed a worm's-eye view of the Film Library's operations. Ernst regarded Iris as “the soul of the Film Library.” Near the end of 1939 as war in Europe spread menacingly, Iris also found herself revisited by two men from her past: Ezra Pound and Wyndham Lewis.
