This chapter details Iris Barry's resignation from the Museum of Modern Art and her move to France. Following cancer diagnosis and her operation, Iris decided that she just could not be bothered at the Museum any more. By the spring of 1949, she had recovered enough to resume traveling. She planned to attend the annual meeting of the International Federation of Film Archives in Antibes, then travel to Paris in October and to London and the British Film Institute on archival business. No one suspected she might not return. By the end of October 1949, Iris was living out of a suitcase in Cannes, first in an attic room on the Cours Massena, then on a sailing vessel with Pierre Kerroux, the olive oil smuggler she had met at the 1947 film festival. On November 27, 1950, she bought La Bonne Font, an old farmhouse with acreage in nearby Fayence, and on December 6 she bought a car. On the same day she finished her letter of resignation to the Museum and the following day mailed it. In a separate letter to her landlord she gave up her New York apartment.
