This chapter analyzes Kitano Takeshi's film Hana-bi (Fireworks, 1997), which revolves around detectives Nishi, Horibe, Nakamura, and Tanaka. The film achieved tremendous success on the international stage with twenty-one awards and six nominations from film festivals and competitions, and it confirmed Kitano's place as one of the leading Japanese filmmakers in the eyes of the global audience. Violent and often sad, Hana-bi also offers a sense of the love and care that can exist even in death. It presents a notion of “furious peace” reflecting sadness, violence, and anger amidst an often beautiful, funny, and musing on the nature of life and death.
