This chapter analyzes Kawase Naomi's film Shara (Sharasojyu, 2003) about the disappearance of a young boy and his family's struggle to cope with the tragedy. While not as successful as Kawase's previous feature Moe no Suzaku or her later film Mogari no Mori, Shara presents many of the themes that are present in both of these more successful films. The importance of human connection and humanity is emphasized and the documentary feel allows the audience an intimacy that is often denied in modern cinema. Shara's gentle but emotional resonance offers a sense of the narrative of life as the traumatic tale of a missing child blends into a narrative of hope for the future.
