This chpater shifts gears entirely into the Lacanian lexicon to examine precisely how the dominant fantasies of classical liberalism, tolerance and neutrality, are transforming in the neoliberal episteme and its embrace of the fantasy of instant wealth. Specifically, I show how the neoliberal embrace of the fantasy of instant wealth turns on a waning social cathexis to both utility and xenophobia, the respective bedrocks (objet a) of the doubled liberal fantasies of neutrality and tolerance. I conclude the chapter with an examination of how statisics aid the transformation of social difference into units of fungibility.
