(p.378) Chapter Sixteen Perils of Bolshevism, Promises of Fascism
Nicholas Miraculous

Columbia University Press

This chapter focuses on Nicholas Murray Butler's stand against Communism. Butler's warnings in 1919–1920 about the perils of socialism became part of his campaign message as he pursued the Republican nomination. While he failed to convince the party that he was the candidate for them, he certainly succeeded in dramatizing the danger of the Bolshevik challenge to American democracy. His antipathy did not prevent him from initially endorsing the Russian Revolution as a vital expression of liberty on the part of a vast people who had been living for centuries under the yoke of the tsar's autocracy. But when Vladimir Lenin ended that utopian dream, Butler immediately turned on Bolshevism as the single greatest threat to the American republic. This chapter also considers Butler's views of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and German leader Adolf Hitler, as well as his position on Fascism and Nazism.
