This chapter presents a model for collaborative social work research in agency and community settings. It argues that all good collaborative social work research involves adapting to the environment into which researchers are invited. In such projects, social workers must be “on tap” rather than “on top.” Social work change research is primarily in service of empowering those on the bottom of the service system. The proposed model is based on the social work researchers' experience with the Women's Community Revitalization Project that research and advocacy are made stronger when they work in ways that are mutually informing. The chapter proposes that good collaborative research involves listening to client and community partners and allowing them to set the agenda for how research can help them to pursue their desired social changes.
