Ch. 2 examines Davies’ small but distinguished oeuvre, claiming that he is Britain’s greatest living filmmaker. It highlights his personal--autobiographical--features, Distant Voices, Still Lives and The Long Day Closes, whose themes he further explores in his seminal documentary, Of Time and the City. Like the other directors, Davies depicts the lives of mostly working class women, including his beloved mother, condemning rigid patriarchy and sexual segregation
