In this chapter, Captain Emad, Zahra Ech'daf Sangur, and Fackria Zugai'er Khata talk about their experiences during the Iraq war. Captain Emad has lived in Sadr City his entire life. During the last years of Saddam Hussein's regime he served in the army as a radar technician. He was overjoyed at the downfall of Saddam, even as the family fell on hard times once his military job was lost. He sold household possessions and worked as a bodyguard to make ends meet until 2005, when he decided to join the Iraqi National Police. Zahra Ech'daf Sangur and Fackria Zugai'er Khata are longtime friends and neighbors in the Jihad neighborhood of Baghdad near the airport. Both are mothers to large Shi'ite families who lived in the mainly Sunni district for years before the invasion and remained during the period afterward for a time.
