Adventures in Denierland
Adventures in Denierland
This chapter offers insight into the organizations and tactics of global warming deniers through an in-depth look at a presentation during the 2009 Heartland Institute Conference by Terry Dunleavy entitled, “‘Consensus’ in Climate Science: An Unsubstantiated Urban Myth.” Dunleavy, an 80-year-old New Zealand wine grower and self-professed nonscientist, serves as executive vice chairman of the International Climate Science Coalition (ICSC), whose website describes it as dedicated to “providing a highly credible alternative to the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) thereby fostering a more rational, open discussion about climate issues.” During his presentation, Dunleavy attacked the groups that helped establish the “urban myth” of scientific consensus, namely the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), whose reports represent the work of 2,500 scientists; science academies and organizations; and many individual scientists.
