(p.313) 10 Roundway Hospital and the Second Battle (1952–1957)

This chapter chronicles Walrond's voluntary admission to the Roundway Psychiatric Hospital and juxtaposes it with the publication of The Second Battle—the only surviving remnant of The Big Ditch—in the literary magazine he'd helped establish in Roundway—The Roundway Review. Every third Wednesday of the month from December 1952 through December 1958, The Roundway Review published articles, sketches, notices, and puzzles—all contrived to keep contributors diverted and readers entertained. Walrond served as its assistant editor. The Second Battle is a detailed treatment of the French canal attempt in Panama that spanned fifteen issues—a startling work of colonial history, published alongside other patients' tributes to the hospital band and reminiscences about a favorite horse at a nearby farm.
