This chapter describes the experience of losing a loved one. It is devastating to give up a loved one, even though separation is necessary. The process of reconfiguring one's inner world to accommodate the void left by the absent person can be demanding. Ultimately, it forces anyone to reconceive who they are. This is the reason why the initial stage of loss is often split between the need for inner regeneration and the desire to remain faithful to the lost loved one. On the one hand, a person who becomes separated from his partner wishes to transcend the past so as to be free to strive into the future. On the other hand, he may feel slightly guilty about overcoming his loss.
