Denis Guénoun

Columbia University Press

This introductory chapter pieces together some of the author's excavated letters written by his grandparents to provide the family background of his father, René Guénoun. At the early age of three, René's father, a French citizen, was sent to Belgium to the fight in the war against Germany. By then, René's mother wrote to her husband religiously, expressing her longing to be with him, and telling him stories about their children. In like manner, her husband would reply to each of her letters. In 1916, René's father returned to France and was designated in a barracks where he was only allowed to see his family on Sundays. During the week, René's father and his wife continued writing to each other. The two, however, ended up in divorce. The chapter concludes by enlisting the René's mother's notes for a memorandum to a persecutor.
