The questions focused on in this book have long antecedents, ones both expected and unexpected. After a brief introduction, I will suggest how I see the various positions from which the history of social work and research have been approached. I will offer some comments on what I see as the limitations of all or some of these five positions. I suggest potentially interesting fields of study—interesting not only in substantive terms but for how they exemplify approaches fruitful for both social work and science. These are: 1. The history of science methodology 2. How fields and disciplines secure identity 3. Social work within wider contexts 4. What we may gain by thinking historically about inventions and discoveries, innovations and controversies, in social work
