This chapter presents the English translation of Section 17 of Fukuzawa Yukichi’s text Gakumon no susume (An Encouragement of Learning). Here Fukuzawa shares his views on popularity. A popular person is one who many others look up to and consider trustworthy and reliable. He is one who inspires confidence in people in whatever calling he pursues, and for whom society has great expectations. Fukuzawa says that people should indeed seek fame and reputation, but to do so according to their station and abilities. People should have broad experience in the world of things and men, both to be known and to know men, and to give full play to their inherent abilities. But in order to be able to accomplish this for personal and social good, the following qualities are necessary. These include being eloquent and vigorous as possible in speech; having a cheerful demeanor and giving a first impression which does not turn people off; and the capacity to interact with old friends and make new ones.
