The Social Paradigm

The Social Paradigm

(p.69) The Social Paradigm
Love in Motion

Reidar Due

Columbia University Press

This chapter considers love as marriage and Romantic feeling. During the period of Romanticism, a modern conception of love emerged, which sees the intelligibility of love in terms of the bourgeois family. Hegel and Freud's modern articulation of love states that human erotic relationships can be characterized as “positional.” The family in modernity is ethically and logically a space in which the subject defines and positions itself. Hegel and Freud's theory sees marriage as a social form that molds natural sexual desire into an intelligible and rational relation of reciprocity. In Romantic ideology, however, love is a privilege of the modern individual who has access to authentic emotions that he can act upon unconstrained by social rules.
