Tim Returns to Middletown
Tim Returns to Middletown
This chapter narrates Tim's return to Middletown, along with his renewed struggles to fit in. His parents found him a local service provider, River Valley Services, which offered shelter, case management, and other services for people with mental illness. Tim tried with varied success to make a life for himself over the next two years, but he soon resumed the cycle of incarceration, release without a decent aftercare plan, destabilization, and discharge from the hospital before becoming stabilized. Tim eventually decided to deepen his focus on spirituality and meditation, commenting on how they provided him with peace and comfort. His father notes the misconception that he has observed that people with mental illness fail to comply with treatment because they do not want to improve their lives. Tim, for instance, did not lack willpower, but he did lack the tools and resources to support his needs.
