Coastal cities around the world will be greatly affected by sea-level rise. Cities at particular risk include Rotterdam, Dhaka, Mumbai, Newark-New York, Miami, Lagos, and Jakarta. The margins of many cities are built on landfill. This is especially so for Boston and provides a major flooding hazard for the downtown. It is essential that cities begin detailed planning now for their sea-level rise response. Retreat will be necessary along the margins of most coastal cities.

Keywords:   landfill, Great Garuda, seawalls, flooding accommodation
