The chapter reviews the definitional debates about the meanings of the terms modern, modernism, and modernity across the humanities and social sciences. It demonstrates that the various meanings and often opposite meanings of the terms repeat the contradictory core of modernity itself and deserve interrogation. It argues that definitional debates often repeat the contradictions of modernity itself; contrasts nominal versus relational definitions; and it shows how modernist studies often embodies the hermeneutic circle, the binary of inclusion/exclusion, and the metonymic histories of iconic figures. Such definitions of modernism typically exclude a plurality of different modernities.
