This chapter presents an interview with filmmaker Christopher Nolan. His feature debut was Following (1988), a low-budget noir thriller co-written with his brother Jonathan. The film gained credibility on the festival circuit and led to increased financing for Memento (2000), the film with which Nolan made his name. The opportunity to direct Batman Begins (2005) sent Nolan's career to new heights and heralded a new era of intelligently scripted superhero movies that placed characterization on an even level with CGI and fight sequences. The interview covered topics such as whether it was his intention to move from the Following to a much bigger canvas with Memento; the risks he took with the film's narrative; and the importance of the film's editing.
