This chapter presents an interview with Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn. Refn's first feature Pusher (1996) established his acute visual style and refusal to shy away from the graphic depiction of violence. The film became a cult phenomenon, spawning the sequels Bleeder (1999), With Blood On My Hands: Pusher II (2004), and I'm the Angel of Death: Pusher III (2005). The present interview took place around the release of Drive (2011), an adaptation of the novel by James Sallis. This violent crime film took Refn's career to new heights, achieving both critical and commercial success and establishing an ongoing collaboration with leading man Ryan Gosling. The interview covered topics such as how Refn came by the novel by James Sallis and what was it about the book that attracted him in terms of adapting it; the three different car-chase sequences in the film; and his preferred use of sound over vision to convey brutality.
