The social psychology of religion remained linked to conjectural thought even in the first two decades of the twentieth century, as Durkheim and Freud sought to elucidate the nature of religion through its inferred origins, and Weber added a religious dimension to the speculations of Smith and Marx concerning the transition to modernity.
